In the early days of Lockdown, second-year Fashion Buying student, Katie, decided it was time to launch her highly anticipated Virtual Styling business... The key takeouts?
1. She recognised what brought her joy each day...
2. SHE JUST STARTED
This is her story...
1. HOW DID FYI HELP YOU WITH YOUR JOURNEY?
Whilst in lockdown I was working as a temporary employee in a hospital for admin teams and it quickly became obvious that picking out my outfit was the most exciting part of the day — the best part of my daily routine! It started to hit me how much the global pandemic was going to affect job hunting and fashion opportunities going forward. Around this time I was creating specific styling packs for family, friends and colleagues to boost their style; giving out tips, advice and sending links to help them build their wardrobe. I soon realised that I had to take my career prospects into my own hands and start creating my own opportunities — and so my Personal Styling business venture began!
2. HOW HAVE YOU DEVELOPED YOUR IDEA SINCE ITS INCEPTION?
When I first started thinking about Katie Gill Styling I only had the one service available - The Personal Styling Portfolio which required 8+ hours of work. It was a fair amount of work and I realised I needed to develop other packages to include entry-level services for clients who are new to Personal Styling. From here, I pulled the Style SOS Package together as my entry package and developed the Wardrobe Revamp as my premium service offer. This has created an opportunity for clients with different budgets and needs!
3. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO TAKE THE LEAP?
Lockdown seemed to breed so many ’side-hustles’ for so many creatives that I just had to push myself to bite the bullet! I started to see other people take the leap and I didn’t want to be pipped to the post. Naturally, I’m a really pragmatic learner and have been known to take my time with planning, so on this occasion, I needed to work against my instincts and just START!
4. HAVE THERE BEEN ANY CHALLENGES YOU HAVE HAD TO OVERCOME?
Self-confidence is a big barrier for me, both before I launched and going forward. In one FYI Member Meet-up fellow FYI member Ellie suggested that I might be struggling with ‘imposter syndrome’ in the beginning - this was exactly the problem! I was comparing my lack of experience with others which left me feeling like I wasn’t good enough or worthy enough to be embarking on this journey. Once I overcame this, it started to be a lot easier.
5. HOW DID FYI HELP YOU WITH YOUR JOURNEY?
Both the FYI platform and the FYI community have helped me so much! Specifically, in helping me develop my services - this has been through advice on my pricing; encouraging me to introduce boundaries and giving advice on my social media strategy. The weekly Members' Meetups have kept me sane throughout the initial stages of starting a business amidst a global pandemic!
6. WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE FOR OTHERS WANTING TO START THEIR OWN BIZ?
Do it! Everyone said it to me and I wouldn’t be in this position without such encouragement. To see your plans come to life and watch success start to unfold is amazing.
7. PEAK OF THE JOURNEY?
Testimonials have bought me to tears so far - seeing the reaction from women who I have helped is the sole reason for doing this.
8. PIT OF THE JOURNEY?
Pit of the journey is certainly trying to juggle this business venture whilst working full time, starting my third year of university, and trying to have a life! I’ve learnt to balance my commitments to avoid burnout but it’s definitely the hardest part so far.
9. WHAT IS NEXT FOR KATIE GILL STYLING?
So much more! I’m thinking workshops, events, more services, the lot! But with that comes so much more planning and curation. I'm loving watching my business grow and taking time to perfect my services. Seeing my vision come to life is amazing!
