Using one of our CV Templates Amelia recently Shot Her Shot by sending her creative and colourful CV to one of her fave brands, My Protein, and got an interview in UNDER ONE HOUR.
SO WHEN SHOULD YOU SEND A COLOURFUL AND CREATIVE CV TO A BRAND?
The main thing I want you to remember is that you are creative, you are in the creative industry and so are the brands you are targeting… Meaning YES your CV should be colourful and creative.
But only if...
🏀 Colourful and creative is your personal brand. For example, you could be super sleek and minimal and want a CV that reflects that aesthetic. That's cool. I love those kinda CVs.
🏀 Your colourful and creative CV doesn't DETRACT from the content of your CV. The #1 thing brands and employers get rattled by is if your CV is style over substance. These people want clear INFORMATION. Hence why CVs are still a very valid thing that can you a role.

AMELIA'S WINNING CV AND HER ADVICE 🏀
THE COLOURFUL AND CREATIVE CV DO'S AND DON'TS:
1. GET THE PROFESSIONAL SWEET SPOT
You gotta hit the professional sweet spot. Not sure what that is yet? Think of the professional sweet spot like a sporty outfit choice… let's say you have an interview and you wanna wear some trainers and a tracksuit. You wouldn't wear a FULL tracksuit with trainers. But you might wear tracksuit bottoms and trainers, but with an oversized blazer and a silk tee. Do you see? It's a mix. Amelia has nailed it with the help of our CV template. It’s colour and impactful, but the content is super clear and concise. That's the aim of the game for your CV.
2. KEEP IT SIMPLE
Don’t go OTT. As I said, brands want clear info with a taste of your creativity. Go get some creative CV inspiration and match it to your Personal Brand. With Amelia's CV the design was the colour, the background. So you could follow suit and input your brand colours into a funky page design, whilst keeping your content clear. Dont have 30 colours on your CV, just pic 2-3 complementary colours. Don’t have crazy and jarring fonts. Dont have your text in yellow...
✅ TOP TIP: To avoid style over substance, start by writing out your CV content first in Word or Mac Pages, then design your CV in InDesign, Word, Illustrator etc. then add your copy to a creative design.
3. KNOW WHO YOU ARE SENDING IT TO
If you are applying online to a big brand such as ASOS, it's likely recruiters will be getting your CV. So they truly want clear info. But they will then send your CV to the department manager, who may want to see a bit of creativity. If you are sending your CV to a brand organically, you can afford to bit more creative and playful.
AMELIA'S ADVICE TO YOU 🏀 ...
1. Why did you choose to use colour on your CV?
I think it’s important that employers know your personality as well as your skills through your CV. Colour is a great way to show that off. For example, the colour yellow shows an employer you’re a happy, warm person!
2. Did you ever wonder whether the colour and creativity was 'professional'? If so, what helped you to make your final design-decsion?
Often when you show older family members a colourful CV they say “Is that your CV”? “Is it meant to look like that”? However, as a creative, it would be strange if your CV was boring. You have to stand out in this industry! Also, if a company didn’t like my colourful CV, then I supposed that’s not the job for me.
3. What is the story of this CV? We know you got a super quick response from My Protein… what happened?
I applied for the role with my CV and got an email saying I’d secured an interview within the hour. I was so happy!!!
4. How did FYI help you with your CV?
I purchased one of the FYI CV templates and chose the colour scheme that I felt matched my personal brand best. I also followed allllll the tips from the FYI Instagram!
5. Any advice for others when creating their CV?
Get as many people to look at it as you can. Aside from FYI, I sent my CV to the careers department at Lancaster Uni where I did my degree. Also, friends/fellow creatives are great for making sure your CV is the best possible. I’d also say duplicate your CV doc so you can edit it slightly to suit different roles
