Following up from The Ultimate Brand Hit-List article and video (heyyyy pun), here is how to follow-up with brands. Following up with brands can sometimes make you feel uneasy but honestly, there is no need! Sometimes people just need a little reminder that you have emailed. Following-up is SO KEY as it makes the person know you are super keen and serious. The key is to keep it short, engaging, inject personality and some call to actions! FYI, a call to action (or CTA) is a term to describe a prompt to immediate response. Check out this FYI post.

Follow up 3 working days after your first email and then once a week after that. If you send your first follow-up on a Tuesday, follow up every Tuesday.

For every follow-up email you send, PLEASE make each one slightly different. Do not copy and paste from the last. Change up the subject line, greeting, call to action (middle section) and sign-off.

The reason you will get a no-reply is either because they are too busy or that they don't have any scope for opportunities, so it's great to try and establish which and provoke an answer.

Make sure you're follow up email is:

  1. Short and sweet
  2. Personal
  3. Fun

TOP TIP: The best days to email brands are ideally Tuesday-Thursday. If we weren't in this crazy COVID crisis and people are in the office as normal, Mondays are normally crazy in the workplace with meetings, lots of to-do's etc. and Fridays people start to switch off and wind down for the weekend. Follow this rule for now too...

Instead of following up in a separate email, send your follow-up in the existing thread. The main benefit of this is that it makes it easier for the person to refer back to your previous email, instead of having to trawl their inbox. If you get no reply from this and have to send a second follow-up, send this as a separate email. Hopefully, this won't be the case!

Hi (x),

Hope you are well! How has your week been?

I’m just checking in to see if you received my previous email about potential opportunities for work - I completely understand that your inbox must be inundated with similar requests and appreciate these opportunities may not be available at this time but thought, ‘no harm in double-checking!’

I am (a recent English graduate) with previous experience in (x) and would love the opportunity to work with a team of (such forward-thinking and industrious women dedicated to the...)

Attached is my CV (and a few example pieces of work that address/ deal with/ discuss...).

Thank you for taking a moment to read this, I appreciate your time is precious and would be incredibly grateful to receive your response.
